The ocean can be unexpected, as anyone who has ever been beside one would attest.
The tide is one thing you should never undervalue; if you find yourself in the wrong spot at the wrong time, it can be rather dangerous.
In a matter of seconds, the tide can unexpectedly engulf humans and animals, and in certain situations, it can result in a slow and terrible demise.
Astro the horse, who was eighteen years old, came dangerously close to this.
The owner of Astro, Nicole Graham, was riding her daughter’s horse along the beach close to Geelong, Australia, which is south of Melbourne. However, the terrain beneath the horses eventually became a muddy death trap and they found themselves on soft sand after some time.
While Nicole’s kid and her horse were able to flee, she and Astro became more and more enmeshed in the muck.
Before long, Astro was completely covered in clay and at danger of suffocating. Nicole fought beside Astro for three hours in a fight for their lives.
Astro’s predicament became increasingly dire the longer he was in the dirt. Nicole had to maintain her 1,000-pound (450-kg) horse’s composure throughout this period to prevent him from getting further mired in the muck.
Astro was on the verge of asphyxia after three hours and might have perished from exhaustion and hunger. Besides, the high tide was approaching.
Thankfully, Nicole’s daughter managed to find safety and make a help call. After some time, a veterinarian and a rescue squad showed up at the location.
To stop Astro panicking, the veterinarian injected him with a sedative. Nicole stayed by Astro’s side during the experience, comforting him with conversation.
Astro was trapped in the mud so deeply that it was not feasible to put a rope around him and pull him to safety, so even when a helicopter was called, it was unable to help.
As the flood neared, Nicole started to fear the worst as the rescue team fought to free Astro.
The ground had turned into quicksand, and though the team attempted to extract the horse, it was too soft.
When a farmer pulled up on his tractor, a desperate attempt was made to release the horse with a rope fastened to his car.
At that moment, a miracle happened: Nicole, the rescuers, and the farmer succeeded in pulling Astro out of the muck.
Nicole has 10 horses and regularly rides them along the beach, but this was the first time one of her horses had got stuck.
Fortunately, everything went well this time, but this story shows it doesn’t hurt to be extra careful.
Above all, this story is proof of the incredible love between a human and his or her animals and that the bond between them can make miracles really happen!
